On our last sailing from San Juan, we arrived early, dropped our luggage, and were able to complete check-in before heading out to explore Old San Juan. We wandered the cobblestone streets, met up with friends, and soaked up the island energy, all while our bags were already being delivered to our cabin.

By the time we returned to the pier, we breezed right through and boarded. Our luggage was waiting at our room. Stress-free, seamless, and so Virgin Voyages!

Virgin Voyages home at PortMiami is as sleek as it gets, and it opens early.

You can drop your luggage at Terminal V starting around 9:00 a.m. on embarkation day. After that, head into the city to make the most of your morning. Bayside Marketplace is a 25 minute walk (or 6-minute Uber!), or grab brunch in Brickell or Wynwood (15-minute Uber rides) before coming back for your scheduled boarding time.

Pro tip: You’ll still board during your assigned arrival slot listed in the Virgin Voyages app, but dropping your bags early means you can explore hands-free.

When we did this, we dropped our bags around 10 in the morning. We then grabbed coffee and explored Bayside Marketplace. By the time we returned, our room key Bands were ready and our bags were already at the room. Talk about a smooth start.

San Juan, Puerto Rico – Pier 4

This one’s our personal favorite as Virgin Voyages makes it so easy.

At Pier 4 in Old San Juan, you can drop your luggage as early as 9:00 a.m. and even finish check-in right then and there! That means you can head off to explore Old San Juan. Grab some Mofongo at Café Manolín, snap some photos by the colorful doors, or take a walk to El Morro — all while your luggage is handled.

When we returned later in the afternoon, we were able to board right away, and our bags were waiting in our cabin. It truly made it feel like vacation had started hours earlier.

We’ve done a lot of research, and below you’ll find details for other embarkation ports like Barcelona, Athens (Piraeus), and Portsmouth. Virgin Voyages follows a similar rhythm: luggage drop usually opens around 9:00 a.m., giving Sailors time to explore before boarding begins.

• In Barcelona, travelers report being able to drop bags by 10–11 a.m. before enjoying a tapas brunch in the Gothic Quarter.
