When I started This Cruise Life in 2020, it was my way of keeping cruising alive during the industry shutdown. At the time, I had only ever sailed Carnival Cruise Line and was determined to reach Diamond status in the VIFP Loyalty Program before branching out. As a result, I was familiar with Carnival Cruise Line’s leadership team even before I started a cruise blog. Christine Duffy was already a familiar face. Throughout the pandemic, her video updates became a reassuring reminder that cruising would eventually return. That’s why the day I met Carnival President Christine Duffy was so special. It’s a story I want to share with you!
Who Is Christine Duffy?
Since becoming president of Carnival Cruise Line in 2015, Duffy has overseen one of the most transformative decades in the company’s history. Her tenure has included the introduction of innovative Excel-class ships and the launch of new destinations like Celebration Key. She led the brand through the industry’s unprecedented shutdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. Often, she is credited with Carnival’s return to record guest demand. Under her leadership, the cruise line expanded the fleet, introduced new guest offerings, and continued to reinforce its position as America’s Cruise Line. Carnival recently celebrated a “The Duffy Decade” making her one of the most recognizable and influential leaders in the cruise industry.
Costa Cruises + Inaugural Sailing
In 2022, Carnival Cruise Line announced they would be acquiring two ships from sister brand Costa Cruises. The brand would keep much of the theming and launch the sister ships as the Fun Italian Style concept for the brand. Watching the webinar from the brand, I knew I wanted to be on Carnival Venezia’s first sailing!
Fast-forward to May, 2023. Carnival Venezia became my first inaugural sailing! Having never sailed on an inaugural cruise before, I didn’t realize all of the fanfare that came with it! And I certainly didn’t realize that Carnival President Christine Duffy would be there! Sure enough, there she was cutting the ribbon for the “brand-new” Carnival Venezia!
Meeting Christine Onboard
While my vantage point wasn’t the greatest, I got to see John Heald, Captain Claudio, and Christine speak at the Ribbon Cutting. How could it get any better for a cruise nerd?
Well, imagine my surprise once on board and seeing Christine just exploring the ship herself! Now, as Carnival Cruise Line President, she was never solo. There was always an entourage with her, along with her personal escort. I thought that maybe at some point during the cruise I might get the chance to say hello.
Well, fast-forward a couple of hours. As I was enjoying my time at Alchemy, Christine and the Captain stopped by to say hello to everyone that was enjoying a drink. It was clear that both of these leaders were excited to launch the beautiful Carnival Venezia. They were both so happy to welcome all of us to their new ship.
It was so cool getting to meet her and chat with her about Carnival Venezia, the upcoming Carnival Jubilee, and some developments in the Caribbean that were still in their early stages. That development received the name “Celebration Key” just a few months after our conversation! Goosebumps.
Her voice is unmistakable. If you’ve ever heard her speak, you know instantly, “That’s Christine Duffy!” And she’s a hoot! She very much appreciated my shirt. She kept touching it saying how soft it was. I think they had enjoyed some wine at Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse prior to this meeting. Gosh, I still giggle at that memory.
She spent about ten minutes with us at Alchemy before her assistant said it was time to head out for the night.
Several More Interactions
The next day was the Diamond Party for VIFP members. As always, the crew welcomed everyone as they entered the dining room, but this time it was extra special. It was the first time they got to welcome Carnival’s most loyal guests to their brand new ship.
Christine actually kicked off recognizing the crew and talking about the handoff from Costa before she handed the mic over to the Captain. He spoke briefly, recognizing the crew and thanking guests for choosing Carnival Venezia and for choosing Carnival Cruise Line again and again. Amazing!
Both Christine and the Captain made their way around the room to mingle with guests. We had a good laugh about our conversation the night before. My cruise buddy Jason got to meet her and he was tickled (he hates this picture of him, but it’s part of the story so I have to include it! lol)
Later that evening, we attended the Captain’s Venetian Toast. Exclusive to the Carnival Venezia and Carnival Firenze, guests are encouraged to wear Venetian masks as they raise their glass to toast the cruise. And in our case, we were also toasting to the brand new ship.
Christine paused for a LOT of pictures. But I would have, too, if I had that amazing mask! If you’re heading out on the Carnival Venezia or Carnival Firenze, trust me, you’ll want to grab your mask prior to the cruise. It’s definitely a must-have for these two Fun Italian Style ships.
Until We Meet Again
Sadly, Christine wasn’t sailing with us for Venezia’s entire Transatlantic journey. Instead, she had to debark and fly back to Miami to “get back to work.” But as we parted, she said with a smirk in her voice, “I have a feeling we’ll be seeing each other on the Carnival Jubilee.”
Since that first time meeting Carnival President Christine Duffy, I’ve had the chance to speak with her on multiple occasions across several different ships, including Carnival Jubilee and Carnival Firenze. Then, we actually sailed together again on Carnival Vista’s inaugural call to that “new development” we spoke about on Carnival Venezia. In fact, we even sat next to each other at Pearl Cove Beach Club the day Celebration Key opened!
